JACOB EICHHOLTZ after GILBERT STUART (AMERICAN, 1776-1845)
GEORGE WASHINGTON
Oil on canvas: 29 x 24 in., 38 x 34 3/4 in. (framed)
Framed; verso label: Dr. Robert Bolenius

Note: This work is probably a copy by Jacob Eichholtz after the Coleman Vaughan Painting by Gilbert Stuart commissioned by Robert Coleman of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1795. Some twenty-five years later, Eichholtz painted the portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Coleman (NGA 1942.9.1 and 1942.9.2) He would have seen their Gilbert Stuart and most likely asked if he could make a copy. Eichholtz is known to have made copies of George Washington. A similar work by Eichholtz was sold at Hess Auction Group in 2016, also a Vaughan type portrait that once belonged to Alexander Scott of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Provenance: Dr. Robert Bolenius, Lancaster, Pennsylvania; His Estate; New York Dealer; Private Collection Montana
Estimate $30,000-60,000

Sold for $20,000.00
